I disagree with the “it was all a dream” one.
In general, yes, it’s a hackneyed plot device that cheats the viewer. BUT the two example films that were listed are actually GOOD examples of how to use dreams really effectively in a story.

Both Total Recall and Brazil are about the nature of truth, reality, and human imagination. Is reality better than the dream because the dream is a lie? Or is the dream better because it brings the hero more happiness and fulfillment?

What makes the use of dreams shitty is when it’s a “twist” or surprise ending. Neither TR or Brazil does this.

Also, for the “end of the world” one, Dr. Strangelove is again a poor example of a crappy apocalypse movie. It’s actually one of the greatest “end of the world” movies ever made, because it’s about the utter futility of survival and the idiocy of the human race. It actually doesn’t follow all the cliche “hero saves the world” plot lines. It makes fun of them.

OK, rant over 🙂 tl;dr
I just really really love movies.

Yup, Brazil is probably my favourite film of all time, and the dream twist only affects a tiny bit of the movie.

And (spoilers) in Total Recall, we decided it was just a dream in the end because of one line – “Hmm, ‘Blue Sky on Mars’ … that’s a new one.”
