VANCOUVER, Wash. — Joey Thomas and William Byrum met under the weirdest circumstances: in traffic along I-205 Northbound near the exit to SR-14.

Thomas was heading home from work and Byrum was on his way to a friend’s house in Vancouver, when traffic came to a standstill.

“Both lanes exiting were blocked,” recalled Thomas.

Police said 26-year-old Darrell Classen, a repeat criminal offender, had been seen punching a woman inside a moving car.

Witnesses said the woman pulled over to the side of the road, got out and ran straight into traffic to escape from Classen, but he chased after her.

“At that point I got out of my truck and me and a couple other guys started chasing him,” said Thomas.

Among the other drivers who had stopped to help was a female bystander. Thomas said he watched Classen slap her across the face. “I was very upset, very upset.”

Byrum also chased Classen. He said when he caught up to the suspect, he body slammed him.

“I picked him up and just slammed him down on the ground so that I could get on top of him,” he said.

With the help of several others, the men pinned Classen down on the side of the road. They made makeshift handcuffs out of a piece of Thomas’s briefcase to keep him restrained.

Byrum said he told Classen, “Yeah, you’re going to jail. We are gonna sit here until the cops get here and you’re going to jail.”

He also snapped a picture of the incident, (shown above) which shows Thomas holding Classen down while smiling. “That smile and that face of triumph of taking this guy down and handling him, that’s priceless man,” he said.

Police said, had these Good Samaritans not intervened, Classen could’ve hurt the woman much worse.

“The way I look at it is, you don’t hit women. I would hope if it were my wife or my mom, somebody else would have taken action if I wasn’t there,” said Thomas.

Byrum echoed “We did something good for somebody we didn’t know. And that’s what’s important.”

Classen was arrested for assault and reckless endangerment. His past rap sheet includes evading police and failure to register as a sex offender.

Police said the woman who was repeatedly punched in the car is shaken up, but she should be okay. Investigators were still working to determine if the two knew each other or why they were in a car together.
