Tech Driven Grand Theft Auto

This is a proof of concept piece by a Chinese tech group on how to spoof a proximity key for a car. Proximity keys are the keys we all carry in our pockets/purses for modern cars–when you get near to the car, it unlocks and allows you to start the car.

It suddenly occurred to the Chinese engineers; if it’s all about signal strength—what about if I just amplify the transmitted signal of a key fob in someone’s pocket while they are buying lunch–you can have your associate start the car out in the street—and drive way with it.

They won’t be able to restart it once they turn it off—but if the car is being stolen to part it out (stealing it for the body panels to re-sell to auto shops )—you don’t care.

$20 in parts.

Truth be told, it underlines the blindspot of auto companies around certain kinds of tech (where are their white hats?)—because this seems very close to the concept of a wifi-expander (and yes, I know we all use meshed Wifi networks now).
