Teen Broadcasts Her Suicide On Periscope After Naming Her Rapist

On Tuesday afternoon in France, an unnamed 19-year-old woman broadcast her own suicide on Periscope to an audience of about 1,000 viewers.  According to The Telegraph, the teen walked in front of a train at the Egly station after naming the ex-boyfriend she claimed raped her. The teen’s alleged rapist reportedly published images of the attack on Snapchat.

On a clip that is still available on YouTube, the teen announces her plans to show up at the train station and end her life at 4 p.m.

“This isn’t about creating a buzz, it’s to get people to react, to open minds,” the teen said in remarks translated by The Telegraph. “What I will say will be alright. What will happen is likely to be very shocking…If there are underage minors watching later on, don’t stay…I’ve reached a stage where I have no desire for anything anymore, nothing gives me pleasure, nothing gives me the strength to get up in the morning.”

At 4:29 pm, the teen ended her life. Although viewers called the authorities, they apparently didn’t show up in time. Footage of a fireman can reportedly be seen picking up the young woman’s cellphone in video feed that has since been scrubbed from the internet. Several clips of the videos that feature the suicide blacked out have been mirrored and shared on YouTube.

The New York Times reported that French officials opened an official investigation into the teen’s suicide. “This person allegedly sent an SMS to one of her close relations, several minutes before her death, to announce her intentions,” local prosecutor Éric Lallement said. “Furthermore, she allegedly made statements to Internet users, via the Periscope application, to explain her act.”

Lallement also said that the teen sent a text message to a friend accusing her ex of raping her. According to the prosecutor, the text read that “she is ending her life because of the evil that he did to her.”

Lallement also said that authorities are investigating the teen’s phone records and working to obtain the suicide video from Periscope. Apparently, the teen’s relatives confirmed that the deceased young woman was having trouble with her ex and was observed to be in a particularly fragile emotional state.

This isn’t the first time the video-streaming app was used to record a disturbing or grisly incident. Just last month, a teen broadcast the rape of her 17-year-old friend on Periscope.

Funny thing is she won’t be able to answer cross-examination in court and her testimony (and any physical evidence) won’t be admissible. He won’t even be charged.
