About the asking for batchelor’s degrees for $15 per hour… that’s the free market for you.

YOU make the decision as to whether to continue studying as long as you want. You make the financial decision about how to fund it and the pay the debt forever. You pick an employable career or a lifelong minimum wage path. You choose whether to take a minimum wage job or unpaid internship that gives vocational skills instead of paying to study. You can’t just drift through life with no strategy and no effort, picking the easy path and avoiding being an adult and expect to be able to retire in not-poverty.

Lawyer (to Aileen Wuornos): I see you’re from Daytona Beach, all of that looks great, it must be wonderful. But can I tell you something? When the beach party is over, you don’t get to say, “You know what? Now I think I’d like to have what everybody else has worked their entire life for.” It doesn’t work that way. – Monster (2003)

Not all companies demand degrees. My company hires people with basic literacy and numeracy (things you’d learn before middle school) and trains them into people earning 6 figure salaries (after tax) plus health insurance in a country where the minimum wage is barely $1,000 a month (about 6 an hour before tax), because we don’t give a poo about your extensive knowledge of Russian Literature. The career path is pretty much guaranteed too, as long as you don’t steal or rape someone. Yet we still have trouble retaining new hires at 1.5x minimum wage because kids these days don’t have the staying power to get through 2 years of low responsibility jobs as they learn a trade based 100% on on-the-job experience.

Somewhere along the line, society, schools, parents and Mr. Rogers has taught kids that everyone is special, which isn’t true from an employer’s perspective; that kids can graduate and immediately change the world and become wealthy high fliers the moment they hit the job market. Unless you studied at a top school as an investment banker or actuary, that simply isn’t the case.
