Thugs Who Broke Every Bone In Grandmother’s Face Are Jailed

Two thugs who broke every bone in a disabled grandmother’s face have been jailed for a combined 37 years.

Nathan Clark and Stephen Mortin attacked Barbara Dransfield with a baseball bat when they broke into her house in Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester.

The gangsters beat up Barbara, who has a prosthetic leg and uses a wheelchair, because her son, Daniel, 30, owed them £100 for cannabis.

She suffered from a fractured skull, while they made off with only some fishing tackle and a small amount of money.

They sent her son a series of threatening messages in the days leading up to the event, with the final one four days before the assault reading: “My guys off to your mam’s now.”

Clark, 24, admitted conspiracy to rob and grievous bodily harm and was jailed for 19 years, while Mortin, 23, pictured with a slight smirk on his face, was convicted of the same offences and sentenced to 18 years.

Barbara, who has still not fully recovered from the attack almost one year on, sobbed as she spoke about the incident following the court hearing.

“That’s all they wanted, money, money, money,” she said. “I kept saying I’ve got none but I was hit again and again.

“The smaller one was baseball batting me and the other one threatened to slash me if I didn’t give him money because that’s all they were asking for, money.

“Why did they do it when they knew I was disabled? It’s not as if I could fight back. I can’t accept my face because it’s still numb all over and I have been told it could take two to five years before I get the feeling back.”

Vanessa Thompson, defending Mortin, said he regrets what happened that night, while Jamie Hamilton, the representative for Clark, said he suffered with ADHD and left school with few qualifications.

Judge Stuart Driver QC said: “Barbara Dransfield was 64-years-old, in her own home late at night, sitting in her wheelchair with one leg, she was helpless.

“One of you smashed her in the face with a wooden bat and did again several times. The other threatened her saying that if she didn’t hand over the money that you would slash her – this was whilst you were carrying a large kitchen knife.

“You broke her bones and her confidence for the rest of her life, you even broke her dentures. It was brutal, cowardly and destructive. This was a plan to arm yourselves with weapons and enter someone’s property with the intention to steal a lot of money.”

A third man, Liam O’Shaughnessy, 29, was acquitted of conspiracy to commit robbery.
