Raw Body Cam Footage Released of Samuel Dubose’s shooting. WARNING: GRAPHIC
On Wednesday, authorities released the disturbing body cam footage that shows University of Cincinnati cop Ray Tensing killing the unarmed 43-year-old Samuel DuBose during a traffic stop on July 19. On the same day, Tensing surrendered himself to authorities and is being indicted for murder.
During the traffic stop, Tensing asks DuBose to hand over his license. DuBose doesn’t show Tensing his license and asks him to check his name to confirm that the license is valid. After inquiring about a visible bottle in the car, Tensing asks DuBose to step outside of the vehicle. As DuBose moves to unbuckle his seat belt, it appears that the car shifts a little from the driver lifting his foot off the brake. Tensing reacts by fatally shooting DuBose.
“He didn’t do anything violent to the officer, he wasn’t dragging him, and he intentionally pulled out his gun and shot him in the head,” prosecutor Joe Deters told reporters.
Tensing then phoned in a story to 911 dispatchers, claiming that he had been dragged by DuBose’s vehicle.
“He was making excuses for the purposeful killing of another person,” said Deters. “I’m not saying he’s smart, I’m saying that’s what I think he did. He lost his temper because Mr. Dubose wouldn’t get out of his car. When you see this you won’t believe how quickly he pulls his gun. Maybe a second — it’s incredible.”
WISTV reported that Deters also called for the disbandment of the University of Cincinnati police, and let the Cincinnati police force take over law enforcement duties on the campus. The campus was shut down for the day in anticipation of the press conference and video release.
Tensing is looking at life behind bars.
