Leavenworth, WA – What began as a routine check of a pick up truck in an empty parking in Washington State after midnight earlier this month turned into a tense shootout between a deputy and the driver.

Chelan County Deputy Lee Risdon can be seen in newly released dashcam video greeting the occupant of the 2006 Dodge pick up in the Leavenworth parking lot around 12:50 a.m. on March 2 with “How you doin’ there, partner?” before letting out an expletive and running for cover.

Officials said that Robert L. Friess rolled down his window and produced a pistol before exiting the vehicle.

What ensued was a two-minute confrontation in which an estimated 28 shots were exchanged between the two men. Risdon was fortunately uninjured in the shootout, while the 66-year-old suspect was shot in his right hand.

Friess fled the scene in his truck at speeds that reached 80 mph as Deputy Mark Hegberg followed him, capturing the pursuit on his dashboard camera. Ultimately, a Washington State Patrol spike strip punctured his tires, causing him to crash at Old Monitor Road.

He was arrested 12 minutes later when he finally complied with orders to exit his truck.

Friess, who faces domestic violence charges in his home state of Wyoming, is charged with first-degree assault and eluding police.
